The figures speak for themselves:

GCSE English Language: 73% A* - C

GCSE English Literature: 68% A* - C

We want our students to be the best.

We have proved that they are.

Our vision is simple: to work collaboratively and positively towards student progression throughout all key stages.

We offer a clear, planned map that will guide them through the Key Stage 3 study programme The principles and practices of the revised National Curriculum ensure effective transition from junior school to senior school. From Year 7 to Year 9 the students will experience a wide variety of English; including: prose, poetry, drama, Shakespeare, creative writing, informative writing and discursive writing. Regular, half-termly assessments in the student's portfolios provide teachers with information on your son or daughter's progress. The Subject Area are also involved in numerous National initiatives, and are at the forefront in piloting many major materials. In Year 9, all learners are entered for AQA Functional English (equivalent to half a GCSE grade) because the ability to communicate effectively and to understand written and spoken Englsih is fundamental to the development and independence of any young person, and will enable them to get the most from education. Functional English is also intended to improve other important skills such as team-working, presentation and problem-solving.

The focus of Key Stage 4 is progression and enrichment for all of our students. We pride ourselves for entering all students for Language and Literature. Our new curriculum map focuses on the individual needs of students.

Regular surgeries are held after school by the Subject Area, and teachers are always on hand to ensure that your son or daughter gets the support he/she needs. Each year, we run a highly successful 'Revision Day' for Key Stage 4 near to the exams, this focuses the students on the necessary skills needed to succeed in the examinations. Equally, the SA are available to calm any nerves on the morning of the exams in 'Early Morning Surgeries.'

Your child will also have the chance to be involved in an array of extra curricular activities; for example the GCSE Poetry Live Day at De Montfort Hall allows GCSE students the opportunity to meet and discuss the compulsory set of poems with the poet themselves. They also have the advantage of listening to Peter Buckroyd or Tony Childs both highly experienced examiners who can give tips and advice on how to get the high grades

With each new year there are certain things that will forever remain constant: our dedication and commitment to the subject and to the students. This has been reinforced in the appointment of a seventh English teacher and having three Teaching Assistants, resulting in smaller class sizes and extra support.

It's clear, every child does matter.
