Subject Area:
Geography

Staff:
· Mrs Cathy James - Subject Leader Humanities/Geography & Achievement Coordinator for Year 7
· Mr Andrew Peploe - Teacher of Geography
· Teaching Assistant - Miss Sarah Purnell

Awards:
N/A

Latest results:
The Geography Subject Area achieved 53% A*-C in 2008 with 100% A*-G results.
Geography is a popular option at GCSE & we hope to achieve even greater success in the summer of 2009.
Our KS3 results were far better than predicted at 77% plus level 5 or above National Curriculum level.

Events:
We believe that learning outside of the classroom is important.  This year Mr Peploe/Mr Allen organised a residential trip to Dovedale.  We have also had a year 9 trip to Conkers.  Future trips include a visit to the Peak District National Park & local studies in and around Nuneaton's town centre.

What we offer:
In Geography we pride ourselves on a board & varied educational experience.  Students can achieve whatever their ability or learning style preferences.  We aim to support the less able whilst challenging the more able.
We follow a shortened KS3 syllabus in Years 7 & 8.  We have opted to move students forward quicker by starting the GCSE syllabus in Year 9.  This allows greater coverage of the GCSE syllabus & relieves some of the pressure students tend to feel by Year 11.
We cover a variety of both human & physical topics.  For example studies of rivers, tectonics & coasts as well as population, settlement & development studies.

Student information:
P2L is set each term in Geography for years 7, 8 & 9.  Instructions & a deadline will be given in lessons.  Should a student be away when these are given out it is up to students to find out what was missed.
Homework is set weekly in ears 10 & 11.  If none is set students should automatically use time set aside to revise or work on coursework.
Help sessions & computer access are available at lunchtimes.  A Humanities extra curricula timetable is displayed in all form rooms & humanities teaching rooms.  GCSE revision sessions are run on Thursdays after school &, nearer the exams, in the Easter holiday & weekends.
We have high expectations within the Subject Area & insist that all students show Care, Consideration & Cooperation.
After school / Extra curricula:

FOR GCSE OPTIONS B, C & D BETWEEN 3.35-4.05PM
The allotted teacher will be there and ready to start by 3.35pm … should no students turn up they will not hang around beyond 3.40pm.  If a teacher cannot make a scheduled session, for whatever reason, they will let each option group know in advance.
In addition see when staff will be available at lunchtimes each week to further support.
