Subject Leader - Mrs E Smith Teachers: Mrs E Smith, Mrs R Price, Mrs K Brooks, Mr A Kyffin Teaching Assistant: Miss C Lloyd
We offer: 1. Applied GCSE in Leisure & Tourism 2. Applied GCSE in Business Studies GCSE's in vocational subjects are part of a package of curriculum reform intended to help 14-19 year olds better prepare for the working world of the 21st century and to widen participation in learning.
Each course carries a double GCSE award. It is the same size as two traditional GCSE courses and carries two grades ranging from A* A* to GG.
Each subject contains three units. Two of the units involve practical assignments, which lead to a portfolio of coursework that is assessed internally.
The third unit is externally assessed, either by a written test, a set project or a timed assignment.
The grades awarded are based on the results achieved in all three units. They aim to:
· Offer students a wider choice of subjects at KS4 and broaden opportunities to learn. · Give 14 year olds who are interested in a broad vocational area a chance to study it and test their interest. · Provide courses for those students who learn better through a practical approach rather than the more theoretical approach of traditional GCSEs.
Teaching and Learning
Leisure & Tourism and Business Studies are designed to bridge the gap between the classroom and the world of work. Students will find many different way of learning available to them when they start an Applied GCSE. Our teachers are very enthusiastic and enjoy teaching both Applied GCSE courses. We try to make the courses as "hands on" as possible. Organising visits into local businesses or leisure organisations to find out what people do at work. We also use role play, work simulations and the internet as well as inviting business people in to school to tell us "first hand" how the industries work. In Business Studies we have developed close links with one of our school sponsors - Triton Showers. This has given us the opportunity to study the business in depth and visit Triton to enhance the understanding of the day to day running of a successful company. In Leisure & Tourism we are developing links with local visitor attractions and organisations such as Twycross Zoo, Alton Towers, Birmingham International Airport, Center Parcs and we hope to run a combined visit to Barcelona in 2007.
GCSE Results
In 2006 the results were
GCSE Double Award Business Studies 70% A*-C
GCSE Double Award Leisure & Yourism 44% A*-C
We have achieved some very good GCSE results in Business Studies and Leisure & Tourism this year. Both subjects have added excellent value to the students education. Many of our students have taken these subjects further and gone on to take Level 3 courses at the local further education colleges.
