  Subject Area: Mathematics

Staff: Mike Cooper, Julie Silk, Liam Niland, Mark Smith, Lizzie Smith, Nick Haddon, Katy Thompson, Stacey Marr

Awards: There are two Advanced Skills Teachers within the department. We are a Headstart Star school. We have been selected as a pilot school for the new qualifications in Mathematics.

Latest Results: GCSE 2006: 66% A*-C.
A former student Daniel Male who gained an A* with us in 2002 has gone on to gain a first class honours degree in Mathematics.

Events: We have taken Year 11 to a conference called 'One grade up at GCSE' where they were given advice on how to improve their GCSE grades by Brian Speed He is famous in the world of Mathematics as an examiner and author.
We have held Year 11 Maths Days, where all Year 11 have spent the day involved in many different activities including lectures on outside speakers and revision tasks.
We are going to take 40 students from Year 9 to a residential maths course in France. This will take place in January of 2008.

What we Offer: We offer AQA GCSE modular mathematics. To our more able students we also offer GCSE statistics. We have been selected as a pilot school for the new qualifications in Mathematics. This means from 2009 students will qualify with a certificate in functional maths. As well from 2008 the majority of students will be able to take a new GCSE called Additional Maths.

Student Information: We now follow a 2 year KS3 course. This means students will sit their KS3 SATs exam at the end of Year 8. At KS4 students will follow a modular course in Mathematics. This is taken during Years 9, 10 and 11.

After School / Extra Curricular: In Year 11 we offer weekly revision classes. These are taken by A-level Mathematics students from KECS. These start in October and run for the whole year until the students start their final exam. We are going to take 40 students from Year 9 to a residential maths course in France. This will take place in January of 2008.
