Media Studies (Mr Howes and Miss Brown)

Welcome to the subject of the future! A good set of results yet again!

2009 65% of students achieved a grade A*-C with 100% achieving A*-E.

Media Studies is a course which gives students the opportunity to explore a variety of media texts: television, film, newspaper, magazines, radio and many others. In each topic that is studied, students will understand the media's form and conventions, the audience to which it is addressed, the institutions that produce it and how people are represented.

Media Studies is unique in that a large proportion of students bring with them vast amounts of knowledge about the media before they begin. What this course is designed to do is allow students to build on the information they already possess and apply it in theoretical ways.

Key Concepts (which students have to learn for each topic)

- Media Language (forms and conventions)

- Institutions

- Audience

- Representation

Assessment Objectives (what students will be marked on)

- Recall, select and communicate

- Analyse and respond

- Demonstrate

- Construct and evaluate

Year 10

In Year 10 students are required to produce at least one individual portfolio: in this portfolio students will be assessed on their ability to analyse two pieces of media, create their own piece of media, demonstrating their skills and being able to evaluate those skills. Students will be expected to hand in at least one completed portfolio. This portfolio does give the opportunity to use technology such as cameras, iMac computer editing and video cameras. (This portfolio is worth 30% of the total GCSE).

Year 11

In Year 11 students undertake another portfolio, this may be done as an individual piece or a group production. This task gives students the opportunity to use digital video cameras and an iMac computer for editing. This portfolio is very similar to the one they will do in Year 10 however there will be high expectations of the quality this production will show. The quality of previous students' work has been that high that some pieces were used for Open Evening and Year 7 Induction Day. (The production portfolio is worth 30% of the total GCSE).

At the end of the course students are required to sit a final examination. The exam is 1 hour 45 minutes and will assess their knowledge and understanding as well as their ability to analyse media texts using appropriate terminology. Students will have two sections to complete, there will also be a choice of which topic they will be tested on (the examination is worth 40% of GCSE).
