Awards: Language College Status As a Language College, we aim to promote the learning of a foreign language and the importance of a foreign language as a key skill in the work place. In doing so we hope to develop students' cultural perspectives and develop an international diversion to their learning as well as raising achievement and attainment in Modern Foreign Languages. Through the Languages Specialism we will develop links with local businesses and support the need for the teaching of languages. We strive to enhance language learning opportunities and develop strategies to increase numbers post 16 and beyond. Students will benefit from international visits to China, Spain, France, Germany and Brazil.

Trips Residential visits are a strong attribute of the Modern Foreign Languages Subject Area and visits to France, Germany and Spain take place annually. The Chinese Summer School organised by the British Council proved to be a success in July 2007 whereby 8 students participated in a 3 week immersion programme. We hope to run a similar trip to Beijing this year and look forward to sharing our experiences on our return. In December 2008 year 8 students visited the Rhineland, Germany and in March 2008 year 7 went to Paris. This academic year, year 11 are off to Paris in February and year 7 will be offered the chance to visit Paris in March. We are also investigating the possibility of launching an exchange visit with a school in Barcelona. KS2 Links At present we are developing our links with our primary schools in delivering the Key stage 2 MFL strategy. Having attended training sessions we are looking to launch this initiative after Easter. This will mean delivering training to Primary school Teachers in the Teaching of MFL and offering lessons in Chinese, Italian, French, German, and Spanish.
What We Offer
Students at Etone have the opportunity to learn French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Mandarin Chinese. At present students in years 7,8, and 9 learn a combination of French, German and/or Spanish. We also have a Polish assistant this year who is teaching students about the Polish culture as well as some basic language. We continue to offer French, Spanish and German at Key Stage 4.
Mandarin Chinese Mandarin Chinese taught by our Chinese Foreign Language Assistant now features as a timetabled lesson within Modern Foreign Languages in Key Stage 3. Students have the opportunity to learn about the cultural aspects of the language though small projects. Chinese New Year celebrations took place in February whereby we worked in collaboration with Art to produce a wonderful display of students' work in the Restaurant. Students enjoyed Chinese cuisine in the Restaurant and had lessons on using chopsticks as part of their China project.
